The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Community (BMLEH) has launched a new funding initiative to promote the conversion to climate-adapted mixed forests. Under the title "Silviculture and Technology for Mixed Forests," the initiative aims to support practice-oriented research and development projects that promote the management of site-appropriate mixed forests. The goal is to create forests that are more resilient to climate change through a diversity of tree species, ages, and elevations.

The call is managed by the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), which acts as the project sponsor of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment, Water, Environment and Nuclear Safety (BMMLEH) within the framework of the Sustainable Renewable Resources funding program. Project outlines can be submitted until November 17, 2025. The transition to mixed forests is a central forestry policy goal in Europe, as current management systems are often still designed for homogeneous, pure stands. Both the silvicultural guidelines and the machinery and equipment used largely date back to a time when age-class management dominated. The funding call aims to develop innovative approaches that facilitate forest conversion and make the management of mixed forests more efficient and sustainable.
The call is divided into three thematic areas:
– Development of practical decision-making tools, procedures and technologies including machinery and equipment for forest conversion and the management of mixed forests,
– Development of models for site-adapted prediction of the development of mixed forests,
– Research on the adaptation of forest ecosystems to climate change.
