By | March 12, 2026

Potsdam (LabNews.io) – The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP will present new material solutions for safe, sustainable, and high-performance energy storage at InterBattery 2026 in Seoul (April 7–11). The focus will be on customized polymer electrolytes, membranes and separators with precisely adjustable pore architectures, bio-based carbon materials, and highly active catalysts – developed for industrial applications along the entire battery value chain. The researchers at… Read more »

New material stores solar energy and delivers hydrogen at the push of a button

By | February 26, 2026

Researchers from the Universities of Ulm and Jena have developed a novel material that can store solar energy for several days and release it as hydrogen when needed – even in darkness. The system is reversible and can be recharged multiple times by simply changing the pH value. The results were published in the journal Nature Communications. The material combines photocatalytic and battery-like properties… Read more »

Breakthrough in lithium-metal batteries – dendrite problem solved

By | February 25, 2026

A research team at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) has developed a key technology that solves the long-standing dendrite problem in lithium-metal batteries. This brings the so-called "dream battery," with significantly higher energy density and faster charging capability, closer to commercial use. The results were published in InfoMat on February 2, 2026. Lithium-metal batteries promise considerably higher capacity than conventional lithium-ion batteries and are considered… Read more »

TU Graz is researching battery-free energy for the Internet of Things

By | August 28, 2025

An international consortium, including Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), is developing sustainable solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT) in the "Ambient-6G" project. The goal is to power IoT devices without batteries by harvesting energy from radio waves or environmental sources such as heat and vibrations. The European Union is funding the three-year project with €8,4 million. Worldwide, there are approximately… Read more »

AI breakthrough opens up “new” materials as replacement for lithium-ion batteries

By | August 1, 2025

Researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) have used artificial intelligence to solve a critical problem for the future of energy storage: finding affordable, sustainable alternatives to lithium-ion batteries. In a study published in Cell Reports Physical Science, the NJIT team, led by Professor Dibakar Datta, successfully employed generative AI techniques to rapidly discover new porous materials… Read more »

Policy Brief on batteries for electric cars: Fraunhofer answers questions and sees need for action

How are electromobility and batteries for electric cars developing? What is the environmental impact of electric cars? What has changed regarding range, what happens to old batteries, and how high is the fire risk? These and many other questions along the entire battery value chain are addressed by the Fraunhofer ISI in the policy brief "Batteries for Electric Cars – Fact Check and Need for Action – a… Read more »

Fewer battery fires in recycling plants thanks to sensor-based waste sorting

More and more electronic products are being disposed of improperly, ending up in recycling bins along with plastic waste. If the batteries and accumulators inside are damaged, they can cause fires in landfills. In the DangerSort project, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS aim to remove these hazardous objects and thus make recycling plants safer – thanks to a sensor-based sorting system. According to… Read more »

World first: liquid battery can take any shape

By | April 13, 2025

Using liquid electrodes, researchers at Linköping University have developed a battery that can take on any shape. This soft and adaptable battery can be integrated into future technologies in entirely new ways. Their study was published in the journal Science Advances. “The texture is somewhat similar to that of toothpaste. The material can be used, for example, in a 3D printer to…” Read more »

Nanocatalyst made from battery waste can convert CO2 from the air into methane

By | March 4, 2025

Upcycling as a climate game-changer: Researchers at TU Wien have created a nanocatalyst from old batteries and aluminum foil scraps that can convert CO2 from the air into methane. Battery waste is a serious environmental problem: It contains substances that endanger both human health and ecosystems. At the same time, it also contains valuable materials like nickel, which we… Read more »

Empa relies on salt batteries

By | October 29th 2024

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) are working on optimizing salt batteries. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, these are non-flammable and can therefore be used in hazardous locations in mining or tunneling, as well as on oil or gas platforms. Researchers at the Dübendorf-based Materials Science and Technology Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) are focusing on salt batteries.
