Nicotine pollutes Berlin waters: Cigarette butts are the main cause
Researchers at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) have detected nicotine in all Berlin waters they examined. As part of a seven-week monitoring program in the summer of 2019, 56 water samples were analyzed from 14 lakes, nine ponds, nine rivers, eight canals, and two canalized streams.
