Globus Baumarkt is taking another step toward sustainability: Since February, all stores have been using reusable transport packaging for plants, so-called reusable plant trays. The company is thus replacing conventional disposable transport containers and reducing plastic waste.

Since 2022, Globus Baumarkt has been an active member of Euro Plant Tray eG and, together with other members from the industry, is committed to environmentally friendly alternatives in the garden and plant sector. The goal is to establish a European standard. The jointly developed reusable plant trays are designed for a long lifespan and can be reused up to one hundred times throughout the entire supply chain.
"With this step, we are pleased to make another sustainable contribution to reducing single-use plastic waste," says Lukasz Neumann, Plant Purchasing Manager at Globus Baumarkt. "The reusable plant trays are very robust and can withstand even the roughest day at the hardware store. Their ergonomic design makes them easier to transport and handle, which was previously proven in practical test runs at our Globus Baumarkt stores. Furthermore, customers can take the plant trays home after paying a deposit and return them after their plants have been safely transported."
In addition to the introduction of this reusable system, Globus Baumarkt, for example, converted its entire range of soils to 2024 percent peat-free in July 100 as part of its sustainability strategy.
In Germany, more and more hardware stores are turning to sustainable solutions to reduce plastic waste. Especially in the area of plant logistics, there is a clear trend toward reusable plant trays. These trays replace conventional disposable transport containers and can be used up to 100 times, enabling significant resource savings.
Bauhaus also introduced a deposit system for plant trays, saving up to 50 tons of single-use plastic waste annually.
The German Environmental Aid (DUH) welcomes these developments but calls on more retailers to consistently switch to reusable systems. Given the 150 million disposable trays generated annually in the plant industry, such measures could save up to 30 percent of CO2. In addition to sustainability, reusable trays offer practical advantages such as integrated water reservoirs for plant quality and ergonomic handling.
