Deep geothermal energy for cities: Fraunhofer study sees potential in Wuppertal

By | April 16, 2026

A current study by the Fraunhofer IEG shows that deep geothermal energy could make a significant contribution to climate-neutral heat supply in cities, reports ingenieur.de. The example of Wuppertal illustrates that even regions that have been little developed so far offer relevant potential – provided that technical, economic, and regulatory issues are specifically addressed. This is the conclusion of a feasibility study conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructures… Read more »

Interactive geothermal map: A milestone for climate-neutral heat supply

By | August 12, 2025

A new nationwide geothermal map shows for the first time where near-surface geothermal energy can be harnessed using geothermal probes. Developed as part of the WärmeGut research project led by the LIAG Institute for Applied Geophysics in Hanover, in collaboration with the Georg August University of Göttingen, geoENERGIE Konzept GmbH, and all 16 state geological surveys, the interactive map is now freely accessible in the GeotIS geothermal information system. Geothermal energy, the year-round available heat from... Continue reading

Fraunhofer Reallabor receives 52 million euros for research into deep geothermal energy in North Rhine-Westphalia

By | February 17, 2025

With the phase-out of coal, it is equally important to develop new heat sources for municipalities and industry, as well as to shape the structural transformation in coal regions. The "Fraunhofer Living Lab for Geothermal Energy, Geotechnologies and Georesources – Geo³" achieves both by creating a research infrastructure in the Aachen city region that is unique in Europe and explores the potential of deep geothermal energy in North Rhine-Westphalia. And by… Read more »

Geothermal energy use should be more easily planned: DFG supports with 1,7 million euros

By | February 12, 2025

Geothermal energy is a climate-friendly energy source for heating and cooling buildings. However, its use has impacts on the soil, some of which are not yet fully understood. Dr. Merita Tafili from the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics at Ruhr University Bochum aims to use simulations to precisely calculate these consequences in advance and thus establish the prerequisites for safe use and… Read more »

E-World trade fair: Fraunhofer presents practical solutions

By | January 28, 2025

The energy transition has many facets: geothermal energy, heat pumps, and district heating networks; process heat, neighborhood planning, and infrastructure development. Fraunhofer IEG develops the energy systems of the future and, as an energy transition institution, conducts applied research on all technologies that make heat supply sustainable. At the E-world trade fair, Fraunhofer IEG presents concrete, well-founded, and innovative solutions, practical methods, feasibility studies, and application optimizations for the challenges facing the real estate industry and… Read more »

Geothermal heat pumps in Sweden – a successful model

By | June 1, 2023

Heat pumps are a climate-friendly and efficient way to heat and cool buildings. In Sweden, a country with long, cold winters, they are particularly popular and widespread. According to the German Heat Pump Association (BWP), renewable energy sources account for almost 55 percent of Sweden's energy consumption, while Germany only reaches 15,5 percent. How did Sweden manage to… Read more »
