Extreme heat kills tropical birds: Populations have fallen by a third since 1980

By | August 12, 2025

Tropical bird populations have declined by 25 to 38 percent since 1980 compared to a world without climate change; some species have even lost over 50 percent. According to a study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, the cause is increasing heat extremes. The research, which involved the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the University of Queensland, and the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre… Read more »

Tropical biodiversity: Destructive human influence extends far into protected areas

By | February 14, 2025

Tropical forests are vast repositories of biodiversity. Although these rich landscapes comprise less than a tenth of the Earth's surface, they are home to more than 60 percent of all known species. Among them are more endangered species than anywhere else on Earth. However, these regions are also under immense pressure, as tropical areas are rapidly being converted for industrial and agricultural use… Read more »

Tropics: Fungi supply young trees with carbon

By | February 4, 2025

Researchers at the Bayreuth Centre for Ecology and Environmental Research (BayCEER) at the University of Bayreuth have found the first evidence that young plants of some tropical trees obtain some of their carbon from fungi. This could allow the plants in the shady undergrowth to compensate for the low carbon uptake through photosynthesis and thus gain a growth advantage over other plants. The researchers report their findings in the journal Functional Ecology.… Read more »
