To meet the growing demand for advice and research on small camels such as alpacas and llamas, the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) has established a New World Camel Center since the beginning of April. The center's cooperation partner, serving all pet owners, veterinarians, veterinary offices, and other institutions, is the Association of Keepers, Breeders, and Friends of New World Camelids (NWK). The center was established at the Veterinary Clinic for Reproductive Medicine and Neonatal Medicine.

The tasks include promoting cooperation and networking among the various groups. Those responsible will accredit advanced training and specialist courses to simplify the process of obtaining specialist certification from the veterinary authorities. Furthermore, the center aims to help shape and expand university teaching on New World camelids in order to train future veterinarians. To improve animal welfare and health in the long term, research on this topic will also be significantly advanced.

Funding is provided through donations; services are billed according to the veterinary fee schedule. To support comprehensive veterinary care for alpacas and other New World camels, consultations with practicing veterinarians are often offered free of charge. Fees are only charged for larger projects.
