Advanced data analysis improves network load forecasting by 76 percent

By | August 7, 2025

A new data analysis by Fraunhofer IOSB-AST for SWE Netz GmbH has significantly improved the forecast accuracy of the electrical grid load for 2024. The forecast deviation decreased from 3,89 gigawatt-hours to 0,93 gigawatt-hours, representing an improvement of 76 percent, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 800 households. Grid load forecasts are essential for grid operators to make energy-related decisions and… Read more »

Agri-photovoltaics: Area potential significantly exceeds expansion targets for climate protection + Commentary

By | July 9, 2025

In several studies, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE has assessed the land potential for agri-photovoltaics – the combination of agricultural use with solar power generation – across Germany. For the first time, all types of agricultural land were considered, and optimal locations were identified through a decision-making process using a wide range of criteria. According to the findings, even the most suitable areas could potentially generate 500 gigawatts peak… Read more »

Study: Photovoltaics on agricultural land enjoys comparatively high acceptance

Photovoltaic systems are increasingly being installed not only on roofs but also in open fields across large areas. This doesn't always meet with approval from local residents. However, so-called agrivoltaics (agri-PV) is viewed much more positively, as researchers from the University of Bonn have now demonstrated. In this system, solar cells are installed on agricultural land – for example, on pastures or as roofing for… Read more »

Base on the Moon: Photovoltaics could provide the energy

By | April 4, 2025

Transporting materials into space is very expensive – one kilogram to the moon costs one million euros. Therefore, it makes sense to utilize resources already available on the moon. To this end, a research team led by Dr. Felix Lang, University of Potsdam, and Dr. Stefan Linke, Technical University of Berlin, combined lunar regolith with ultrathin perovskite to… Read more »

Greylag goose optimization: a game-changer for renewable energy systems

By | March 13, 2025

The agricultural sector's increasing demand for efficient and reliable energy solutions has underscored the limitations of traditional solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods often struggle to maintain optimal power extraction under fluctuating environmental conditions, leading to wasted energy. Furthermore, standard inverters often produce AC output with high total harmonic distortion (THD), which can… Read more »

Extremely thin coating increases efficiency of existing solar systems

By | February 27, 2025

The Jena-based company INNOVENT eV has developed an innovative solution based on the deposition of nanostructured silicon dioxide (SiOx) layers under normal conditions, i.e., atmospheric pressure. These layers are produced using a patented, mobile process. The process is two-stage and begins with a conventional cleaning of the module surfaces using a mobile device. This device also carries the necessary technology for the second stage… Read more »

Green Week 2025: SynAgri-PV introduces itself

By | January 10, 2025

Agri-photovoltaics, or Agri-PV for short, presents an opportunity for agriculture and the energy transition: It can help reduce pressure on the scarce resource of land and advance the energy transition by preserving valuable soils while enabling the expansion of solar energy. In Hall 23a: “Good Food. Strong Land. Future-Proof Agriculture.” of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL)… Read more »

Using AI to develop better photovoltaic materials faster

By | December 16, 2024

Perovskite solar cells are considered a flexible and sustainable alternative to conventional silicon-based solar cells. Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are part of an international team that, within just a few weeks, discovered new organic molecules that can increase the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. The team cleverly combined the use of AI with fully automated high-throughput synthesis. The developed strategy is… Read more »
